Dr. Nichols is Professor Emeritus in the School of Exercise and Nutritional Sciences at San Diego State University and currently a research associate and the Program Director of the UCSD DXA School. Dr. Nichols is an exercise physiologist specializing in musculoskeletal health across the lifespan, in populations ranging from young athletes to frail elderly. As former director of the SDSU Adult Fitness Program, she has over 30 years of practical and research experience in developing, administering, and evaluating exercise programs for older adults, with particular emphasis on improving balance, mobility, strength, and functional fitness to ultimately prevent falls and bone fractures. Dr Nichols has published over 100 peer-reviewed journal articles and has presented her research findings at regional, national, and international scientific conferences. Her professional memberships include the International Society for Clinical Densitometry, the American Society for Bone & Mineral Research, and she holds Fellow status with the American College of Sports Medicine. She is also a member and Past-President of the Female Athlete Triad Coalition, an international consortium of clinicians and researchers dedicated to improving prevention, recognition, and treatment strategies for the Triad syndrome. When not in the lab she can often be found cycling, and has accumulated nearly 30 years of master’s racing in road, mountain, and cyclocross events.
